Hi Jim and Chris.

I received a very interesting phone call today from Microsoft Software Help Support.  The man on the phone (Ron) who spoke very poor English said that my computer was signaling them that it had some hurtfull files and he was going to talk me through to clean them up.  He proceded to tell me to go on the computer and click on start then my computer then management where it brought up this snapin launcher and click to continue.  I did not know what to do (if this guy was really from Microsoft or what) I told him I had my baby in the tub and needed to call him back.  He gave me a # and his name, and to call him when I had time to clean these files.  What do you think?  I have never had a phone call like that, even when a few years ago my computer was hacked into and froze.  Do you know what this snapin launcher does? I follow your blog all the time and trust you.  I have Kaspersky on both computers and also run all the latest windows updates.  Please help.

Good for you!

Just hang up!
If you haven't started a support ticket with Microsoft, they will NOT call you.
I did a google search for "computer support scam phone call" and found all sorts of information. Apparently this is a growing scam/problem.  They step you thru a procedure that ends up giving them remote access to your computer.  You were right to distrust the call.
Good job

Hi Chris,
Thank you for your response.   No, I have not started a support ticket with Microsoft.  I should report this #to them.
Last week I was looking up some tips on cleaning my Magnalite cookware and encountered a bad site.  My security system alerted me of virus, and malicius files.  I followed the steps and cleaned them out.   Do you think there is a connection?   Is there something else I should do to make sure they are off my computer?
Thanks again.  I am off to work.

I don't think you need to do anything more – just hang up when they call.

I am slightly concerned when you say that

My security system alerted me of virus, and malicius files.  I followed the steps and cleaned them out

If you were alerted of the bad site, that usually prevents you from getting a virus.  Following steps … sounds suspicious.  Just run an extra virus scan to confirm that you are clean now.  You might even want to get a 'second opinion' by running Microsoft's free scan.  You can find it at http://www.microsoft.com/secur…..fault.aspx
