A friend said that her doctor was to E mail some things to her…X-rays, I think.  He said that Picasa was going away.  Truth?

Hey Roxie!

No … not going away.  But, yes, maybe morphing, and changing name.

The only thing that has been officially announced is that Picnik (the online photo editor with a button on Picasa's first tab of editing tools) is being retired on April 19.  Many of Picasa's fun editing tools that were added in version 3.9 came from Picnik.  And, for Google Plus members, when you click on your photos, you can click on 'Creative Kit' and get much of the editing tools that had been available with Picnik.

Picasa may be changing its name to Google Photos.  My guess is that April 19 would be a good time for them to do that.  If that happens, I sure hope they do something to distinguish between the online photo-sharing software and the desktop photo management software.  Over and over again, I 've had to explain the difference between Picasa (desktop software) and Picasa Web Albums (online photo-sharing.)  It would be even worse to have Google Photos (desktop software) and Google Plus Photos (online photo-sharing) !!

They should change the name – after all, it is one of their most popular products, yet it doesn't have their name on it.  Google bought Picasa in 2004 and kept the name.  They probably should have renamed it Google Photos right away, then we wouldn't have to freak out now.  btw – I do own the domain name http://www.googlephotostutorials.com so that my http://www.picasatutorials.com site can continue if this does happen!  It sure doesn't roll off the tongue though does it?

Same thing with Blogger – that should be called Google Blogs.

Did you see my video: pics56.Removing Google Plus to Use Picasa Web Albums

It might give you some idea about what's going on in the Google world.  They want us all to become Google Plus members.  But, until that happens, they need to maintain Picasa Web Albums.  And, the Picasa desktop product is still very strong at Google.  Google is certainly not above killing product lines, but they do it with failures, not stars.

When I announced Picasa 3.9, I mentioned my thoughts on the direction of the products at the end of the article.

Bottom line – I don't know what's going to happen but there are plenty of rumors, which is probably what the Doctor heard.
