I thought I had seen some "article" on the software to create and run this forum.  I am involved with another group that is just setting up their forum and I wanted to gleem all the information that I can about setting up forums.

Is there a link to "software" for this forum?

The software we are using is called Simple Press Forum.  It is an add-in to a WordPress blog or website.

Here is a link to their website:http://simple-press.com/

We're still learning it, and we like it.

You state that you are still learning this software.  I would like to learn more and be able to set up a forum myself.

For now, I have a couple of questions for you.  Is there instructions on creating a forum on the "Simple Press" site?  Do you have to have a "Wordpress" site in order to use the "Simple Press" software, or could you just use the "Simple Press" software on an existing domain?

As I say, I want to learn more, so I will be asking more questions.

Thanks.

OK, I have been reading more, understanding less, but reading more.  I have looked at my site summary.  It is a Linux 10Gig site with PHP 5.x.  Currently I have 0 of 10 Available SQL Databases.  Also, I have used 1.00 MB of 10000 MB.

References that I have seen indicate WordPress is used for Blogging.  Can you use it and how for "normal" web sites?

I have also seen wordpress.com and wordpress.org.  What is the difference?

All asking questions.

Hey Al,

We do teach a seminar on WordPress, but it is a bit too complex for our standard audience.  You can download the handout at: http://www.geeksontour.com/fil…..dpress.pdf  Yes, you can create full-blown websites, not just blogs.  This website (geeksontour.tv) is 100% WordPress.

WordPress.com is kinda like Blogger in that it is all hosted for free by the WordPress.com company – lots of rules and regulations about what you can and can't do with your own blog/site.  WordPress.org is wordpress for self-hosted sites – you would need to buy a hosting solution from someone like GoDaddy.com then they install the WordPress software for you.  This is what you must have in order to use SimplePress.

Your site specifications (PHP, SQL etc) look fine.  You just need to know if your webhost will install WordPress for you.

So, i think I might be fine.  Our website is hosted by GoDaddy.com.  Would I just phone them and ask them to install Worpress on my site, or do I do it?

At GoDaddy, you have your choice to do it yourself or have them do it.  The big thing I love about Godaddy is that a knowledgeable person almost always answers the phone and can help you.  So, I tend to have them do it even when it is easy to do it yourself.  They often look at your account and have other suggestions as well.

However, once they do an install from their end, it may limit how you can update it later … I ran into this once, don't remember the specifics … just remember thinking, "I should have done it myself."

Bottom line, they are very helpful on the phone – I guess if I were you, I'd go ahead and call them.  Ask their opinion about installing WP yourself.  Their website is huge, and it can take a long time to navigate to where you need to be – they can step you thru the process on the phone – and still let you do the install yourself.

When it comes to SimplePress – you're on your own, Godaddy can't help with that (at least not to my knowledge) You'll need to understand FTP to get SimplePress going.

Do you have a time frame that you need to get this done?

We don't have to be together for me to help you – it's all online stuff.

Time Frame?  Well, here is the trick – This is a want rather than a need.  This is something that I would like to do.  Currently, our web site is designed in Word and saved as a html file.  Then, I use WS_FTP95LE to publish.

I have also been thinking about the forum for the Safari-International chapter of FMCA.  I sort of stuck my hand up when they asked for moderators.  One day I will learn to keep my hands in my pockets.

Well – if you're comfortable with using word for the website, switching to WordPress will be a lot of learning on your part.

You might want to look into the forum software I was using before I switched to WordPress (see our old forum).  It costs a little bit, but they do everything for you on the hosting side.  It's at http://www.websitetoolbox.com/  Same software that George uses (http://forums.vagabonders-supreme.net/

(note: if you haven't read George in a while, be prepared for a shock)
