Question from email (*please* post questions here in the forum!)

I have been trying to use the Lat/Long for 2 days trying different things and I can't get it to work.  I am trying to find Cloud 9, Caulfield, MO and my GPS says:

N 36degrees37.458'
W092degrees08.017'

It will get me right here to the entrance of this ranch.  But when I try to put it in Streets & Trips 2011, I keep getting an error each time.  How do you get the degree symbol there also?  Could you email me step by step instructions on how to do this?  Thank you,

Answer

First of all, the video on how to enter Lat/Lon into Streets and Trips is: sttr02-Finding Places

But, you're going to run into another problem because the notation from your Garmin is in a different notation.  For Lattitude and Longitude, there are 3 main types of notation.  I converted your coordinates into all 3 below – I used Google Earth for all the conversions. You may want to see if your garmin can be set to display coordinates in the decimal format.

  1. Decimal: 36.624300° -92.133617°
  2. Degrees/Minutes/Seconds: 36°37'27.48"N 92° 8'1.02"W
  3. Degrees, Decimal Minutes: 36° 37.458'N 92° 8.017'W

Your notation is the Degrees with Decimal minutes.  Streets and Trips options only allow for Decimal or Degrees/Minutes/Seconds. I entered the decimal version of your coordinates and got a location near Caulfield.  Check out the screenshot and see if it looks right.  The screenshot below also includes exactly what I typed into Streets and Trips Find Lat/Lon box: (click on the thumbnail to enlarge it)

Does that help?
